“Speaking Up” is a speaking event aimed to ignite discussions about topics that are often brushed aside.

Presenters will discuss topics that affect families within our community, but aren’t always talked about. Through awareness of Alopecia, grief, communication, and how to provide for those that may be struggling, we can build and be part of a stronger community. This allows us to help our family and friends, or a community member in need.

This event is a fundraiser for Talk It Up Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) (3).

Presenters:

Anny Havland (Executive Producer/Host of talkituptv.com).  We are thrilled to have Anny speaking at our event.  She lights up the room, and brings hope to others through her work. Learn more about Anny and Talk It Up T.V. by clicking here.

Deeann Callis Graham (Author/Publisher of “Head On: Stories of Alopecia”)

Deeann Graham lives in Skagit County, owns a small business, and is author of Head-On, Stories of Alopecia. Graham has lived with alopecia areata for the past thirty-eight years. After decades of feeling silenced and alone with her diagnosis, writing, speaking and raising positive awareness of alopecia are roles she has eagerly taken on. Graham co-leads the Seattle based Children’s Alopecia Project support group and works with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation as a resource to provide support to those in need.  Deeann is filled with compassion for others and a desire to serve and educate others, and we are excited she’s presenting for us.

Christine Olson (Workshop Leader/Coach)

Christine knows how to make you laugh, and loves to interact with her audience.  We know you’ll leave with tips and tricks that will help you communicate with others, allowing you to be present and helpful for friends, family and your community. We’re excited she’s bringing her ability to empower others to this event.

Sarah Valeos (Author/Publisher of “My Angel, You Are Loved”)

After Sarah’s friend’s son passed away at 16 days young, she was inspired to write “My Angel, You Are Loved,” a pregnancy poem and keepsake journal that celebrates children living or passed.  This process inspired her to learn more about grief. She realized how little we are taught about how to be in grief or support those that have dealt with grief.  Often, we say things to be helpful, but instead we are hurtful.  As grievers, we don’t know how to let others know they hurt us, or how to ask for help.  The only way to change this is to start discussing it.  Sarah is looking forward to shining some light on this topic through sharing about her losses, her mistakes and her successes in times of grief so you can learn to ask for help, or to be present for family and friends during times of loss.
